Philosopher, essayist, journalist and philosophy teacher, Alain campaigned for peace in Europe before the First World War. Between the wars, he continued to fight for pacifism and opposed the rise of fascism.

Biography:

Although fundamentally a pacifist, Alain temporarily set aside his convictions during the First World War. He enlisted in the army to defend his country, even though the law at the time allowed teachers to be exempted.
