The author of several award-winning books and short stories, many of which deal with the theme of violence - whether in everyday life or in war.
Biography:
As a child from a cultured background, Claire Martin suffered violence at the hands of her father and the nuns at the various convents she attended, which she details in her autobiographies, Dans un gant de fer and La joue droite.
She has lived in Ottawa and Quebec, as well as 10 years in France.
In 2008, she published a new book, Le Feu purificateur, at the age of 94, continuing a career of over 50 years of writing.
She has won the following awards:
1958 - Cercle du livre de France award
1966 - Prix Jean-Hamelin for Un gant de fer
1966 - Prix France-Québec for La joue droite
1967 - Governor General's Award for The Right Cheek
1984 - Officer of the Order of Canada
1999 - Medal of the Académie des lettres du Québec
2001 - Companion of the Order of Canada
2007 - Officer of the Ordre national du Québec
