Catholic nun who left for India at a young age to devote herself to charity. Founded a congregation of sisters to care for the most destitute patients, whose missions multiplied to reach 610 in 123 countries at the time of her death.

Biography:

Born in Skopje (now in Macedonia), Mother Teresa became a nun in 1931, and left for India, where she became a teacher and then school principal. In 1946-48, she decided to devote herself to the poorest of the poor and left the convent to live in the slums. In 1950, she founded the congregation of the Missionaries of Charity (sisters); in 1963, in Calcutta, the Missionary Brothers of Charity; in 1976, the contemplative branch of the sisters; in 1979, the Contemplative Brothers; in 1984, the Missionary Fathers of Charity.
