Citizenship

In a strictly legal sense:

  1. Citizenship; all the rights attached to this title.

  2. A legal status which guarantees its holder the enjoyment of public freedoms and the right to vote (except for women in countries where this latter right is not granted to them).

  3. In Anglo-Saxon countries, there is an additional, strictly legal notion of responsibility to the state (generally: allegiance to the state, payment of taxes and military service) in exchange for the protection of its citizens at home and abroad, and the right to vote and stand for election.
