Catholic writer, novelist, essayist and playwright.

Country: French

Date: 1913 - 1979

Biography:

After studying at the Lycée Condorcet in Paris, then at the Institut des Sciences Politiques, Gilbert Cesbron began his professional career in radio. At the same time, he devoted himself to his passion, writing. His first collection of poems, Torrent, was published in 1934. In 1944, Les Innocents de Paris, his first novel (published in Switzerland), was a great success, winning the Guilde du Livre prize. In 1948, he won the Prix Sainte-Beuve for Notre prison est un royaume. He became a household name in 1952 with the publication of his famous play Il est minuit, docteur Schweitzer, adapted for radio and screen. Gilbert Cesbron tackles topical issues with a great deal of modesty, sensitivity and sincerity, which has won him many readers. The misery and suffering of the underprivileged are sources of inspiration, as is the work of working priests in Les saints vont en enfer, the difficulties of young people in Chiens perdus sans collier, euthanasia in Il est plus tard que tu ne penses , or the problems of violence (and non-violence) in Entre chiens et loups. From 1972, he was involved in social and humanitarian actions, and contributed to Secours Populaire Français. In 1978, he was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Paris for his body of work.
