Christian philosopher and theologian, author of numerous philosophical and religious works, including Les Confessions, in which he describes his spiritual journey. His writings deal with faith, peace and war, good and evil...
Country: Roman of Berber origin
Biography:
Augustine's mother was Christian and his father pagan. He didn't embrace a faith until adulthood, in search of answers about good and evil: first he was a Manichaean, then chose Christianity at the age of 31 from the readings of St. Paul (1).
St. Augustine's thought has inspired many Christian theologians from the early Middle Ages to the present day. He himself drew on Greek philosophers for rationality, and on the thought of St. Paul for faith (1).
He saw human beings as fundamentally for peace, even when they are at war (2).
His writings indicate that he was particularly opposed to the death penalty (3), but in favor of persecution, especially against godless people (4).
