You can use your bare hands to defend yourself against one or more opponents, armed or unarmed. But in fact, it gives you so much more:
- It allows you to develop the mental and physical coordination of your energy.
- What’s more, it helps you control your opponent.
- Finally, it teaches you to become a master of yourself.

The advantage of Aikido over other martial arts is that it teaches you to dissuade your opponent and neutralize his aggressive intent, rather than annihilate him. You will gradually gain the unshakeable certainty that it is your mind that governs and decides, that your brute force can be used, shaped and even surpassed by the power of your spirit.
With regular practice, you’ll not only master your physical and mental coordination, but also understand the laws of coordination.
For the curious:
The word Aikido is made up of 3 words: Aï + ki + do = to unite + spirit + way: this is the way to attune one’s spirit to that of others and, by extension, to the Universe.
This fighting art was developed from 1925 onwards. It offers the strong points of the martial arts that preceded it (Judo, Karate, etc.), namely, that fighting is an art, with a quest for mastery of the opponent and mastery of one’s gesture.
Its originality and interest lies in the fact that it helps you to go further by teaching you to confront situations with distance and control, and even to persuade your opponents to renounce their own violence.
This principle of “non-violence” forms the mental basis of Aikido. It will gradually enable you to clear your mind, to understand and come to terms with what is calm or violent, peaceful or destructive around you, so as to bring you into harmony with yourself and with the universe.
Its founder, Master UYESHIBA, succeeded, through Aikido, in getting us to focus on exercising our minds and not just, selfishly, our bodies. He created for us a martial art based on the refusal of violence and even the peaceful resolution of conflicts. This may seem surprising at first glance? Read this anecdote and you’ll understand. His sincere desire was to help people all over the world to get along, appreciate and love each other. [LINK]
