Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015)

The first sustainable development goals were adopted by the UN in 2000 to kick-start the 2000-2015 millennium (the Millennium Development Goals – MDGs). They included 8 major sustainable development goals, including one dedicated to universal access to basic education, but none on peace and none on sustainable, quality education. This millennium has seen neither peace, nor even a reduction in violence. In terms of education, access has been considerably increased, but teachers have not been sufficiently trained, and too many pupils have left primary school without mastering the rudiments of reading and arithmetic. In addition, the learning of values and life skills had not been considered.
