The Geneva Spiritual Call

On October 24, 1999, United Nations Day, theGeneva Spiritual Appeal was proclaimed in Geneva Cathedral, signed by a number of international and local personalities from Geneva and around the world.

This Appeal is now supported by representatives of all the religious communities present in Geneva, and by a growing number of people from civil society.

It is addressed to the world’s leaders, whatever their sphere of influence, and calls on them to adhere unreservedly to the following three principles:

Because :

  • our religions or personal convictions have in common respect for the dignity of the human person
  • our religions or personal convictions have in common the rejection of hatred and violence
  • our religions or personal convictions have in common the hope of a better and fairer world

we, representatives of religious communities and civil society, call on the world’s decision-makers, whatever their field of activity, to respect absolutely the following three precepts:

  • Do not invoke religious or spiritual force to justify violence of any kind.
  • Do not refer to a religious or spiritual force to justify discrimination and exclusion
  • Don’t use your strength, intellectual or spiritual capacity, wealth or social status to exploit or dominate others.

Our Appeal, which is in keeping with Geneva’s tradition of welcome, asylum and compassion,
is open to anyone whose convictions accord with the present requests.
