Since Gru came from a green family, everyone was happy. The day Rod was born, everyone admired his orange eyes and orange hands. Since Rod came from an orange family, everyone was happy. And even though they were different colors, Gru and Rod became the best of friends. <\/p>\n
Being neighbors, they saw each other very often. They went to the same school and their families had lots of picnics together. Rod and Gru lived across the street from each other in the City of a Hundred Colors. They liked to do lots of things together, like play ball, read, watch the clouds, sing and draw.
They were very happy, because they could trust and rely on each other. Because life was full of beautiful colors when they were together. It’s always nice to have a best friend. <\/p>\n
But one day, an orange man in town got very angry with a green man and yelled at him, then decided that all green people were his enemies. His anger was so powerful that it aroused other angers, and a few months later, many orange people were fighting green people in the streets, in banks and in parks. <\/p>\n
The children didn’t agree with these conflicts. They were happy to have friends of all colors. But it was hard to do anything about it. The children were locked in the house because it was dangerous outside. The tension between the orange and green people became so great that they decided they could no longer live together. So they cut the City of a Hundred Colors in two and built a great wall between the two, right on Gru and Rod’s street. <\/p>\n
Many people were forced to leave their homes and move to the other side of town. Many lost their jobs and friends because of this decision.
Gru was very sad. The wall was so high and gray, the city was nothing but green, and his best friend was on the other side… His parents were very sad too. They loved their neighbors and the other orange people in town, and now they were forcibly separated. <\/p>\n
Like the other children, Gru was often outside, watching the birds as they flew from one city to another. If only we could fly, she thought, we could cross the wall and play with our friends on the other side… <\/p>\n
One day, Gru had a wonderful idea. Why not build a kite to communicate with Rod on the other side of the wall? Even if she couldn’t fly, she could tell her friend how much she loved him, and they could play together in the sky. <\/p>\n
Gru then built a big blue kite and wrote hello on it. Every day, after school, she went outside to fly her kite, and the other children began to do the same. Three days later, Gru still hadn’t heard back from Rod. Even though many green kids were doing the same, she was a little disappointed. When her father realized this, he told her to be patient. Maybe Rod was building a wonderful kite to surprise her. So Gru continued to fly his kite throughout the week. <\/p>\n
On Saturday morning, Gru’s mother woke her up with a big smile and sent her outside to see what had happened. And there it was! Not just one, but thousands of kites in every color, saying hello to her and all the other green boys and girls. A thousand-colored friendship filled the sky, higher than all the gray walls, all the anger and conflict. <\/p>\n
