The full 2000-2002 text lists eight determinants <\/i>of peace that should dictate the educational approach to peace education….<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

For peace and non-violence to prevail, we need :<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n
    \n
  1. \n

    reinforcing a culture of peace through education<\/b>
    by revising curricula to promote values, behaviors and lifestyles conducive to a culture of peace, such as peaceful conflict resolution, dialogue, consensus-building and non-violence.<\/p>\n

    Such an educational approach should also be driven by the following objectives:<\/b>
    \t <\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    promote sustainable economic and social development<\/b>
    through the reduction of economic and social inequalities, poverty eradication, sustainable food security, social justice, lasting solutions to debt problems, empowerment of women, special measures for groups with special needs, environmental sustainability, etc.
    \t <\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    promoting respect for all human rights<\/b>
    human rights and the culture of peace are complementary: when war and violence prevail, it is impossible to ensure human rights; similarly, without human rights, in all their forms, there can be no culture of peace…
    \t <\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    ensuring equality between women and men<\/b>
    through the full participation of women in economic, social and political decision-making, through the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against women, through support and assistance to women in need,…
    \t <\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    promoting democratic participation<\/b>
    Among the essential foundations for achieving and maintaining peace and security are democratic principles, practices and participation in all sectors of society, transparent government and administration, the fight against terrorism, organized crime, corruption, illicit drugs and money laundering…
    \t <\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  6. \n

    developing understanding, tolerance and solidarity<\/b>
    to abolish wars and violent conflicts, we need to transcend and overcome images of the enemy through understanding, tolerance and solidarity between all peoples and cultures. Learning from our differences through dialogue and the exchange of information is a process that can only be enriching…
    \t <\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    supporting participatory communication and the free flow of information and knowledge<\/b>
    freedom of information and communication and the sharing of information and knowledge are essential to a culture of peace. At the same time, measures must be taken to counteract the promotion of violence through the media, including new information and communication technologies…
    \t <\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  8. \n

    promoting international peace and security<\/b>
    the achievements of recent years in the field of human security and disarmament – including the nuclear weapons treaty and the anti-personnel mines treaty – should encourage us in our efforts to negotiate peaceful settlements of disputes, eliminate the illicit production and trafficking of weapons, find humanitarian solutions in conflict situations, and address post-conflict issues… (1)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
