{"id":9152,"date":"2025-06-25T08:26:04","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T06:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/academy.grainesdepaix.org\/ressources\/moral-violence\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T15:51:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T13:51:47","slug":"moral-violence","status":"publish","type":"ressource","link":"https:\/\/academy.grainesdepaix.org\/en\/ressources\/moral-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Moral violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\">\n<p>Moral violence, that which harms <i>moral<\/i> integrity, is any gesture, act, word, allusion, writing, drawing, etc. that results in an outrage, slander, stigmatization, defamation, discrimination, denigration, humiliation, etc. that discredits <i>publicly <\/i>or <i>surreptitiously by word of mouth<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Moral violence can be perpetrated by an individual or a group, as well as by an institution or authority.<br \/>(See Constitutions below).<\/p>\n<p>These forms of moral violence are often based on differentiating characteristics, relating in particular to :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><i> cultural identity<\/i> &#8211; such as race, color, ethnicity, religion, origin&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><i>the person&#8217;s condition<\/i> &#8211; age, disability, gender, birth, education, place of residence, wealth\/poverty, etc., social origin, &#8230;.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>to the <i>ideas, actions<\/i> or activities of a person or group.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All moral violence is psychological violence, i.e. it violently affects the psyche of the person affected.<\/p>\n<h4>Moral violence can also be characterized by:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>stigmatizing relations between individuals from different groups, or between different groups or between an institution and individuals considered to be different<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>a vision that dehumanizes the person or group in question<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>unequal power relations (dominant-dominated), although the dominant can, in turn, be stigmatized and have its reputation tarnished.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Choice of terms:<\/b><br \/>In everyday French, the term &#8221; <b>violence morale<\/b> &#8221; is sometimes used to describe <i>psychological violence<\/i>. The distinction between the two notions is often blurred and needs to be clarified.<br \/>For example, harassment, often referred to as moral harassment, can be psychological violence based on repetition, wear and tear and a dominant\/dominated relationship &#8211; and can be painfully amplified by the moral violence resulting from the transmission of discredit to others; whereas slander, stigmatization or defamation are always double psychological and moral violence, as they by definition <i>publicly<\/i> affect reputation and honor. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Legislation:<\/b><br \/>The laws of several countries are beginning to make a clearer distinction between <i>psychological<\/i> and<i> emotional<\/i> <i>abuse<\/i>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Brazilian law (Maria de Penha Law, August 7, 2006) specifies, for example, that: moral violence includes any behavior involving slander, defamation or insult, while psychological violence includes any behavior that damages (&#8230;) mental health and the capacity for self-determination.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The French law of June 29, 2010 defines the offence of psychological violence, focusing on repeated acts that lead to mental or physical degradation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>See also <\/i>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grainesdepaix.org\/fr\/ressources\/dictionnaire\/violence_psychologique\" target=\"_self\">Psychological abuse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Constitutions and the protection of human dignity :<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Respect for human dignity is one of the fundamental clauses of the Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the European Charter of Fundamental Rights (2000), the European Constitution (2004) and many 70 constitutions of countries from all cultures and continents.
